In One Piece Card Game, the Life area represents your Leader’s endurance and a hidden resource. When the Leader takes damage, the top Life card is checked. If it has a Trigger, you may reveal and activate it instead of simply adding it to your hand.

Set up Life
After placing the Leader, deck and DON!! deck, put cards from the top of the deck into Life equal to the Leader’s Life value. Keep them face down and ordered. They are not a second hand and cannot be inspected freely.
Resolve one damage
- Confirm the attack hit the Leader after battle and Counters.
- Take only the top Life card.
- Check whether it has a Trigger.
- Without a Trigger, add it to hand without revealing it.
- With a Trigger, choose between adding it to hand or revealing and activating the Trigger.
- Pay costs, choose legal targets and follow the printed destination.
A Trigger is optional
You do not have to activate it. Keeping the card may be better when the effect has no legal target or the card is useful later. Once it has been added to hand without activation, you cannot reverse the decision.
Track the final zone
| Situation | Action | Check |
|---|---|---|
| No Trigger | Add to hand | Do not reveal unnecessarily |
| Trigger declined | Add to hand | Decide before continuing |
| Trigger activated | Reveal and resolve | Follow costs and targets |
| Card is played | Place in stated area | Check restrictions |
| Card is trashed | Place in Trash | Do not also add it to hand |
There is no universal rule that every Trigger goes to the Trash or hand. The card text decides.
Zero Life is not immediate defeat
A player at zero Life can continue. Under normal victory conditions, defeat occurs when that Leader takes another damage. Effects that add, remove or inspect Life work only as their text permits.
Protect hidden information
Do not lift the next Life cards. If no Trigger is activated, move the card to hand without showing it. “Look at” and “reveal” are different instructions; follow the exact wording.
Plan without knowing Life
You can include coherent Triggers in a deck, but never assume a specific card is in Life. Compare the immediate Trigger with the value of keeping the card for Counter, your next turn or hand size.
Common errors
- taking several Life cards for one damage;
- revealing a card without Trigger;
- activating after putting it in hand;
- ignoring a cost or condition;
- automatically trashing the card;
- losing immediately at zero Life;
- reordering Life without permission.
Checklist
- the Leader took damage;
- only the top card was taken;
- other Life cards stayed hidden;
- Trigger was checked before choosing;
- costs and targets were announced;
- the final destination follows the text.
Build the habit: top card, Trigger check, choice, resolution and final destination.
