In Pokémon TCG, a card can leave the hand, play area or discard pile in several ways. “Discard”, “shuffle into your deck” and “put on the bottom of your deck” are not interchangeable. Each instruction creates a different destination and a different amount of public information.
This guide complements our overview of Pokémon Trainer cards. The goal here is to execute card text precisely.
Start with the verb
Before moving anything, isolate the main verb. Discard sends the card to its owner’s face-up discard pile. Shuffle into the deck returns it and makes its position unknown. Put on the bottom gives it a precise destination without randomising the deck.
Then identify the source: hand, Active Pokémon, Bench, discard pile or deck. Check the quantity and who chooses before touching cards.
Three destinations
| Instruction | Destination | Information | Check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Discard | Discard pile | Face up and inspectable | Use the correct owner’s pile |
| Shuffle into deck | Random deck position | Position becomes unknown | Finish the shuffle |
| Put on bottom | Bottom of deck | Destination remains known | Keep any required order |
Always read the whole sentence. An effect may say top, bottom, in any order, then shuffle, or name an opponent’s deck.
Discard clearly
Each player has a separate discard pile. Cards there remain face up and may be inspected. If an effect discards from your hand, choose only cards that meet its criteria, reveal only what must be verified and place them in your pile.
A Trainer card normally follows its instructions and then goes to the discard pile unless stated otherwise. A Knocked Out Pokémon and its attached cards also go to their owners’ discard piles. Keep this area apart from the hand and deck from the start of the game.
Do not describe every move to the discard pile as “discarded by an effect”. Exact wording can matter to effects that watch a particular action.
Shuffle completely
If cards are shuffled into a deck, gather exactly the requested group, insert it and randomise the deck so their positions cannot be tracked. Do not draw, search or continue until the shuffle is finished.
- Identify every affected card.
- Put them into the named deck.
- Shuffle without exposing other cards.
- Offer a cut when the play setting requires it.
Attached cards do not automatically follow a Pokémon unless the instruction or rules say so. A different card in the discard pile also remains there.
Put cards on the bottom
Putting a card on the bottom does not authorise a shuffle. Slide it under the deck face down without looking at nearby cards. If several cards move, follow any instruction about their order. Do not leave them as a separate pile beside the deck.
Separate cost from effect
A card may require a discard as a cost before producing an effect, or move cards during resolution. Announce and pay the cost first, then perform the effect. Helpful table language is simple: “I discard this as the cost”, “I shuffle these into my deck”, or “I put this on the bottom”.
Start, verb, destination
- Locate the card before touching it.
- Read the exact verb and quantity.
- Point to the destination.
- Reveal only required information.
- Finish every shuffle or ordering instruction.
Common mistakes
- Shuffling after putting a card on the bottom.
- Returning a discarded card to the deck by habit.
- Moving attached cards when only the Pokémon is named.
- Showing the whole hand to verify one card.
- Continuing before a shuffle ends.
- Using the wrong discard pile.
Resolution checklist
- Where does the card start?
- What is the exact verb?
- How many cards move?
- Who chooses cards and order?
- What must be shown?
- Is the final destination correct?
