Location cards change how you read a Disney Lorcana play area. They are neither sideways characters nor Actions that disappear after resolving. A Location stays in play, may host your characters, generate Lore and become the target of a challenge. Several pieces of information therefore need to remain visible.
This guide expands on our method for reading a Lorcana card. The goal is practical: know when to pay the Location cost, how movement works, when to gain Lore and how to resolve damage without inventing a rule.
Read the information unique to a Location
A Location is easy to recognise by its landscape layout. It has a play cost, Willpower, a move cost and sometimes a Lore value. It may also have abilities. Read it in this order: play cost, permanent statistics, then conditions in the text.
| Element | Purpose | Mistake to avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Play cost | Ink paid to play the Location | Confusing it with movement |
| Move cost | Ink paid to move a character there | Paying it when nobody moves |
| Willpower | Damage threshold the Location can hold | Treating it as Strength |
| Lore | Gain at the start of its owner’s turn | Adding it immediately when played |
Playing a Location moves nobody automatically
During your turn, pay the ink cost and place the Location in your play area. Unless an ability says otherwise, no character moves there for free. The Location enters as a new game object; moving is a separate turn action.
A clear layout prevents the common assumption that one payment covers both actions. Keep Locations on a separate line, then position characters close enough to show where they are without covering important text.
Move a character step by step
- Choose one of your characters. You can only move your characters to your Locations.
- Choose the destination. A character already at a Location can move to another Location, but cannot simply leave for a neutral area.
- Pay the move cost. Use the value printed on the destination.
- Move the physical card. Make the association clear to both players.
- Apply relevant abilities. Check text that triggers or applies at the Location.
Moving does not automatically exert the character. It also does not ignore other turn restrictions. Treat it as a main-phase decision and reread any effect that changes the cost or result.
When does a Location provide Lore?
A Location with a Lore value gives that amount to its owner at the beginning of their turn in the sequence defined by the rules. Do not gain it when the Location is played or whenever a character moves there. Use a beginning-of-turn reminder so each Location is counted once.
This differs from questing with a character. A Location does not need to be exerted to provide Lore and, under the rules, Locations are never ready or exerted. Their landscape orientation is not a game state.
Challenge a Location without looking for Strength
A Location can be challenged during the Main Phase even though it is not exerted. Your challenging character follows the normal requirements for a challenge. It deals its Strength to the Location, but a Location has no Strength and therefore deals no challenge damage back.
Place damage counters on the Location. Once its damage equals or exceeds its Willpower, banish it. Characters at that Location are not banished with it; they remain in play but are no longer at a Location. A specific ability may change the outcome, so card text takes priority.
The Poke-Geek method for a readable board
- Keep one line for characters and another for Locations.
- Place each character near its Location without hiding statistics.
- Use visible counters only for damage.
- Announce the paid cost and destination when moving.
- Add Location Lore once at the beginning of the turn.
- After a challenge, compare damage and Willpower immediately.
Cards associated with Lorcana: Into the Inklands provide a natural context for discovering the card type. The Poke-Geek Disney Lorcana collection shows different products, while the rules and printed card text remain authoritative.
Common mistakes
- confusing play cost and move cost;
- moving a character for free without an effect;
- gaining Lore as soon as the Location is played;
- readying or exerting a Location like a character;
- looking for retaliating Strength on a Location;
- banishing its characters when the Location leaves;
- forgetting that specific card text can change the general rule.
To keep alternative costs separate from Location rules, revisit our guide to Actions, Songs and Shift. Each mechanic has its own timing and conditions.
Checklist before ending the turn
- Every character at a Location is clearly identified.
- Move costs were paid to the correct destination.
- Damage on each Location is visible.
- Lore was gained only at the correct time.
- Banished Locations reached or exceeded Willpower.
- Characters remained in play unless an effect said otherwise.
Do this now: in your next game, place a reminder by each Location to track characters, damage and beginning-of-turn Lore.
