A Pendulum Monster has two possible roles. It can be Summoned as a monster or activated as a Spell Card in a Pendulum Zone. Its unusual layout therefore contains a monster text, a Pendulum text and a Scale.
The mechanic becomes manageable when you separate three questions: where is the card, which text applies and which Levels are strictly between the two Scales? This guide complements our overview of Extra Deck monster types.
One card, two roles
In a Monster Zone it is a monster and you read its Level, ATK, DEF and monster effect. In a Pendulum Zone it is activated as a Spell Card and its Pendulum Effect matters. Both texts do not automatically apply together.
| Location | Role | Text to read |
|---|---|---|
| Monster Zone | Monster | Monster Effect |
| Pendulum Zone | Spell Card | Pendulum Effect |
| Face-up Extra Deck | Available card | No active effect merely from being there |

Where are Pendulum Zones?
The leftmost and rightmost Spell & Trap Zones become Pendulum Zones while a Pendulum Monster is activated there as a Spell. The three middle zones cannot hold your Scales. Existing cards can block those two spaces, so plan your back row before committing.
Calculate the range
Compare both values. You may Pendulum Summon monsters whose Levels are strictly between the lower and higher Scale. Scales 1 and 8 allow Levels 2 through 7, not Levels 1 or 8. Left-to-right order does not change the range.
The rule uses Levels. Xyz Monsters have Ranks and Link Monsters have Link Ratings; matching numbers do not make them eligible.
Six-step routine
- Check both outer Spell & Trap Zones.
- Activate one Pendulum Monster in each outer zone.
- Read the applicable Pendulum Effects.
- Announce the lower Scale, upper Scale and eligible Levels.
- Select legal monsters from your hand or face-up Extra Deck.
- Confirm a legal destination for each card.
You may declare one Pendulum Summon per turn during your Main Phase. That single Summon may include several monsters if they are all legal.
Hand versus face-up Extra Deck
Monsters from the hand can use available Main Monster Zones. Pendulum Monsters Summoned from the face-up Extra Deck must go to an Extra Monster Zone or a Main Monster Zone a Link Monster points to. Count those destinations before announcing your selection.
When a Pendulum Monster leaves the field
If a Pendulum Monster on the field would be sent to the GY, it is placed face-up in the Extra Deck instead, unless a specific effect changes the destination. Do not extend that rule to a card leaving the hand or Deck.
Read every interaction carefully and use the same discipline as for Chains and Spell Speed.
Common mistakes
- Using one of the three middle Spell & Trap Zones.
- Applying the monster text while the card is a Scale.
- Including the Scale values themselves.
- Confusing Levels with Ranks or Link Ratings.
- Declaring a second Pendulum Summon in the same turn.
- Ignoring Extra Deck placement limits.
Final checklist
Are both outer zones valid? Which Pendulum Effects apply? What is the exclusive range? Does each selected card have an eligible Level and a legal destination? Have you already Pendulum Summoned this turn?
Set two different Scales, announce the permitted Level range, then check every destination before your Pendulum Summon.
