Many Yu-Gi-Oh! mistakes come from taking a legal action in the wrong phase. The standard flow is Draw, Standby, Main Phase 1, Battle, Main Phase 2 and End Phase. Announcing each transition keeps both players aligned.
This guide complements our Main, Extra and Side Deck organisation guide, the OCG and TCG legality guide and the Yu-Gi-Oh! collection.
Turn overview
| Phase | Main purpose | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|
| Draw | Normal draw and opening effects | Skipping straight to Main |
| Standby | Effects naming this phase | Missing a cost |
| Main 1 | Summon, Set and prepare | Trying to return after Battle |
| Battle | Declare and resolve battles | Ignoring Damage Step limits |
| Main 2 | Prepare after battle | Using it without entering Battle |
| End | End effects and hand check | Ending too quickly |
Draw and Standby
Announce Draw Phase and make the normal draw when allowed. The player going first does not draw on their first turn. Then announce Standby and resolve mandatory or optional effects that specifically name it.
Main Phase 1
Use your available Normal Summon or Set, perform legal Special Summons, change battle positions when permitted and activate or Set Spells and Traps. Before leaving, check summons, resources and protection. You cannot casually rewind after announcing Battle Phase.
Battle Phase
Battle includes Start, Battle, Damage and End Steps. Declare the attacker and legal target, then resolve the attack in the correct windows. The first player cannot conduct a Battle Phase on their first turn. Damage Step activation rules are narrower than ordinary timing.
Main Phase 2
After Battle, you may take remaining Main Phase actions and prepare the board. Main Phase 2 is available only after entering Battle Phase; going directly from Main Phase 1 toward the end does not create it.
End Phase
Resolve effects that last until or activate during End Phase, apply relevant hand limits and clearly announce the end of the turn. Pause for the opponent’s responses before changing the game state.
Training method
- Place six neutral phase markers outside the playmat.
- Move one marker when the phase changes.
- Announce the phase before acting.
- Wait for the opponent’s response.
- Record repeated mistakes after the game.
Checklist
- phase changes were announced;
- mandatory effects were resolved;
- Main 1 and Main 2 were not confused;
- Battle and Damage windows were respected;
- End Phase effects are complete.
Build the habit: slow down only at phase changes and the whole Duel becomes clearer.
