In Disney Lorcana, an Action, a Song and a character with Shift solve different problems. An Action creates an immediate effect and then goes to the discard. A Song is a special Action that can be paid for normally or sung by an eligible character. Shift is an alternate cost used to play a character on top of an allowed card already in play.
This guide complements our method for reading a Lorcana card and our two-ink deck-building guide. The goal is to identify the resource spent, what remains in play and when each option is legal.
Action, Song and Shift at a glance
| Mechanic | Card | Payment or condition | After resolution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Action | Action card | Ink cost or another allowed cost | Discard |
| Song | Action — Song | Ink or eligible singer(s) | Discard |
| Shift | Character with Shift | Alternate cost and valid card in play | Stacked character in play |
An Action creates an immediate effect
An Action is played from hand, enters the Play zone briefly while its effect resolves, then moves to the discard. It is not a permanent that can quest, challenge or be exerted. Unless card text says otherwise, it is played during your main phase. Read its cost, required choices and sentences in order.
Announce the Action, pay the chosen legal cost, resolve the full effect, then handle triggered abilities waiting in the bag. If part of an effect cannot be completed, follow the current rules and do as much as possible without making an illegal choice.
A Song is still an Action
A Song has both Action and Song on its classification line. It follows Action rules but offers an alternate cost: instead of paying ink, you may exert an eligible ready character whose ink cost is at least the Song's cost. A drying character normally cannot sing.
Singing does not change the printed cost; it changes how you pay. Choose one payment method. Sing Together can allow several eligible characters to contribute when the keyword's conditions are met.
Shift replaces the normal character cost
Basic Shift lets you pay the Shift cost and put the character on top of a character with the same name in play. The lower card remains in the stack. Damage stays on the shifted character, while the top card does not automatically gain the printed text of the card beneath it.
A shifted character follows the state of its support: an exerted support makes it enter exerted; a dry support lets it enter dry; a drying support keeps it drying. Newer Shift variants may name different legal supports, so read the exact wording.
Do not combine alternate costs freely
Singing, shifting and playing for free are alternate costs. When playing a card, choose the applicable method rather than stacking several alternate costs. A free-play effect does not automatically let you sing or shift the same card as an additional benefit.
Record the payment method during testing. This separates a legal tempo gain from a shortcut that changes the play process.
The five-question method
For every candidate card, record its exact type, normal cost, alternate cost, required support and final zone. Then assign a role such as development, interaction, protection, draw or finishing.
Test ten opening hands. A Song without a singer, a Shift character without a support, or too many one-shot Actions exposes a real dependency. The aim is not a universal ratio but a playable sequence.
Common mistakes
Do not leave an Action in play, exert a drying singer, shift onto an invalid support, remove damage during Shift or combine alternate costs. Finish the current Action before resolving triggers from the bag.
Say 'pay', 'sing' or 'shift' aloud. Clear communication helps both players follow the choice and makes rules checks easier.
