A Token is a monster created by an effect
A Monster Token appears on the field because of an effect. It starts in neither the Main Deck nor the Extra Deck. Its creating text normally defines its name, Type, Attribute, Level, ATK and DEF. Those characteristics matter for battle, costs and Summons that require specific properties.
A Token is not an extra deck card or a free copy of another monster. It exists only because an effect Special Summoned it. This guide complements our overview of Fusion, Synchro, Xyz and Link Monsters by focusing on what a Token may represent, occupy and become.
Use an unambiguous physical marker
You may use an official Token card, coin or suitable marker if it cannot be confused with a Duel card and can clearly show Attack or Defence Position. An ordinary face-down card is a poor marker because it can look like a hidden card from the Deck or hand.
Use consistent markers and place each fully inside a Monster Zone. If Tokens have different characteristics, distinguish or label them without obscuring the field. The marker tracks state; it never changes the values set by the creating effect.
Every Token occupies a Monster Zone
A Token takes one available Monster Zone. If no appropriate zone is free, you cannot create the announced number and leave extras waiting off the field. Check space before resolving and place each Token in an identifiable zone.
Creating several Tokens can provide resources but also fill your board. Our method for organising Main, Extra and Side Decks separates deck cards from resources created during a Duel. Tokens count in none of those three Decks.
Always face-up Attack or Defence
A Token can exist in face-up Attack Position or face-up Defence Position. It cannot exist face-down. Orient it immediately and keep the state visible. If an effect would place it face-down, that instruction does not turn it into a hidden card.
Use vertical for Attack and horizontal for Defence. Never flip the marker to simulate Setting it: hidden-information rules do not apply to a Token that way.
Tokens do not enter hand, Deck or Graveyard
Tokens can exist only on the field. When destroyed or when an action would return one to the hand or Deck, it is simply removed from the field. It does not remain in the Graveyard, get shuffled into a Deck or become a card in hand.
Announce the intended movement, remove the marker and continue the applicable resolution. Do not leave it in the Graveyard as a reminder, where it could be mistaken for a valid target or counted by another effect.
Tributes and Materials require exact reading
A Token is a monster on the field. It may be Tributed or used as Material for certain Summons when the rules, procedure and card text allow it and its characteristics satisfy every requirement. An effect can forbid Tokens or require a property the Token lacks.
Do not reduce this to “Tokens work for everything”. Check number, Type, Attribute, Level and name restrictions. For Link Summons check Link Rating and Material qualifications; for Synchro add Levels exactly and identify the required Tuner.
Clear exception: never Xyz Material
A Token cannot be used as Xyz Material. Xyz Materials are placed under an Xyz Monster, while a Token cannot exist there as an attached card. A matching Level does not create permission.
Before an Xyz Summon, remove Tokens from the candidate list and find real monsters meeting Level and text restrictions. Never slide a marker under an Xyz card as a reminder; that would represent an illegal state.
Keep the reason for leaving the field
A Token removed after destruction, Tribute or use as Material physically disappears, but the cause still matters. An effect requiring destruction is not automatically satisfied by a Tribute, and instructions specifying another movement must be read with Token rules.
Say “destroyed by battle”, “Tributed for the cost” or “used as Link Material” before removing it. The visible destination is the same, but game events are not interchangeable.
Correct three table mistakes
Do not create a Token without a free Monster Zone. Do not use a face-down Duel card and lose track of position. Do not attempt to use a Token as Xyz Material. Also remove spent markers completely so they cannot be mistaken for live monsters.
Align identical Tokens without overlapping zones. If values change, separate the original characteristic from the current modifier. In an event, use an accepted marker and call a judge if representation or interaction is unclear.
Poke-Geek Token checklist
Read the creating effect and record characteristics. Count free Monster Zones. Choose a clear marker. Show face-up Attack or Defence. Before a Tribute or Summon, verify every requirement and exclude Xyz immediately. When it leaves, state the cause and remove the marker.
Remember effect, identity, zone, position, use and exit. Browse the Yu-Gi-Oh! selection while checking each product’s actual contents and language separately. Before creating a Token, check the free Monster Zone, its position and the exact use allowed by the effect.
