A deck box advertised for one hundred cards will not necessarily hold one hundred cards in every setup. Sleeve thickness, double sleeving, dividers and tokens all change the real volume. Start with the exact deck you intend to carry, then check that it is supported without being compressed.
Count everything that must travel
Lay out the main deck, any game-specific extra cards, tokens, reference cards and dividers. Pokémon, Magic Commander and One Piece setups do not occupy the same space. Decide whether dice and counters belong in the box; hard objects are safer in a separate compartment.
Single sleeves and double sleeves need different space
An inner sleeve adds a little thickness to every card, which becomes significant across a full deck. Complete the protection setup before choosing a box. Our guide to inner sleeves and double sleeving explains how to avoid trapped air and uneven stacks.
| Setup | What to test | Good sign |
|---|---|---|
| Single sleeved | Full deck and divider | Easy removal, upright support |
| Double sleeved | Settled protected deck | No pressure on edges |
| Deck with tokens | Cards and separated tokens | No contact with hard objects |
| Several piles | Each identified block | No mixing in transit |
The four-step Poke-Geek fit test
- Prepare the final sleeve and divider configuration.
- Insert the deck without corners catching or sleeves wrinkling.
- Close the lid normally; it must not press down on the cards.
- Gently tilt the closed box above a table. Slight movement is acceptable, but the deck should not scatter or be crushed.
Signs that the box is too tight
If cards must be pulled by their top edges, the fit is too restrictive. Watch for bent dividers, rippled sleeves, caught corners or a lid pressing on the stack. Leave a small practical margin so a replacement sleeve or reference card does not prevent closure.
Signs that the box is too large
A deck that travels a long distance inside the box can lean and knock sleeve edges. Use a clean fitted divider or a closer box size, never loose abrasive objects as filler. Individual cards needing rigid protection belong in a toploader, semi-rigid holder or magnetic case, not loose in a play deck box.
Read the stated capacity correctly
Check whether the manufacturer refers to standard-size cards and which sleeve setup it assumes. The Ultra Pro Pokémon Sinnoh Alcove Click Box in the Poke-Geek catalogue is presented for one hundred standard-size cards. Compare that reference with your own sleeves, dividers and accessories.
A magnetic closure or fitted lid secures a correctly loaded box; it cannot compensate for poor sizing. Nothing should enter the closing area or rise above the top edge.
Travel checklist
- Is the complete deck in its final sleeve configuration?
- Are sleeves clean, matching and undamaged?
- Does the divider stay straight?
- Does the lid close without unusual pressure?
- Are dice and tokens isolated from cards?
- Is the box stable in the bag?
Compare the Poke-Geek deck box collection with your real setup in mind. The right box supports the deck, allows a natural grip and keeps sleeve edges intact.
Final tip: build and sleeve the complete deck first, then perform the insertion and closure test. Real fit matters more than a capacity number read in isolation.
