A mana curve shows how the spells in a Magic: The Gathering deck are distributed by mana value. It helps reveal whether the deck has relevant actions in the early, middle and late game. A curve can fail even when its average looks reasonable: it may count false early plays, rely on ramp that is not drawn or cluster too many cards at one cost.

Define the plan before counting costs
Write what the deck wants to do in its first turns, how it gains an advantage and how it ends the game. Then label each spell as development, interaction, card draw, protection, ramp, threat or finisher. Two cards with the same mana value may fill different turns: a two-mana removal spell can wait for a target, while a two-mana creature is often intended to develop the battlefield immediately.
Draw the printed curve
Separate lands, then sort each spell by mana value. Place variable-cost cards according to their expected use instead of leaving all of them at zero. For alternative costs, reductions and modal cards, note both the printed value and the amount you expect to pay.
This first curve is a snapshot, not a verdict. An average alone is not enough: two lists with the same average can have completely different distributions and colour requirements.
Separate real plays from merely castable cards
Ask whether you genuinely want to cast each card as soon as that amount of mana is available. A one-mana protection spell is not necessarily a turn-one play. A two-mana counter or removal spell may do nothing without a relevant opposing action.
Create two rows under every cost: proactive plays and conditional answers. A crowded two-mana column filled only with responses can still leave the deck without development.
Connect the curve to lands and ramp
The curve shows when you want to cast spells; the mana base shows whether you can. Check colours as well as land count. A spell requiring two matching coloured symbols early is more demanding than a spell with generic mana at the same value.
Ramp changes the expected pace but should not be counted twice. If the deck expects to reach four mana on turn three, it must draw and cast its accelerator often enough. Test hands without ramp too.
Match the shape to the strategy

These are diagnostic signals, not universal quotas. Format, card pool and local pace change the desired curve.
Test sequences, not just an average
- Draw an opening hand and note colours and the first real action.
- Simulate several turns and record unused mana and stranded cards.
- Repeat without selecting only strong hands.
- Classify the issue: lands, colours, high costs, missing plays or situational interaction.
- Change only a few slots before testing again.
Common curve mistakes
- counting a variable-cost card only at zero;
- treating protection as an automatic early play;
- assuming ramp is always drawn;
- ignoring double-colour requirements;
- cutting every expensive spell without checking the win plan;
- rewriting the deck after one game;
- using only an average instead of the distribution.
