DON!! cards are a payment resource, a temporary power boost and a condition printed on some effects. That versatility causes the most common confusion: resting DON!! to play a card does not automatically boost a character, while attaching DON!! does not pay a cost. Announce the use before moving the resource.
This guide separates active, rested, attached and returned DON!!. It complements our One Piece first-turn guide without repeating mulligan decisions or the full phase order.
Four states to keep separate
| State | Action | Purpose | Check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Active DON!! | Upright in the cost area | Available to pay or attach | Not used already |
| Rested DON!! | Turned in the cost area | A cost has been paid | It stays in the cost area |
| Attached DON!! | Placed under a Leader or Character | Power boost and effect condition | The boost applies during your turn |
| Returned DON!! | Moved to the DON!! deck | Pays a DON!! -X cost | Do not leave it on the field |
Paying a cost
To play a card, rest active DON!! in your cost area equal to its cost. Payment and playing the card are separate operations: the used DON!! stays in the cost area, rested. Effects that ask you to rest DON!! follow the same principle when activated.
Say “pay X”, count active cards, rest them together, then play the card. This prevents double-counting and keeps attached DON!! out of the payment pool.
Attaching DON!! is not payment
During your Main Phase, you may attach active DON!! from your cost area to your Leader or Characters. Each attached DON!! gives that card +1000 power during your turn. Place it under the card so the link remains visible.
Attaching does not rest the DON!!. Once attached, it is no longer available to pay that turn. Conversely, a rested DON!! in the cost area grants no boost. Our guide to active, rested, Blocker and Rush helps keep these board states clear.
Reading [DON!! xX]
A condition such as [DON!! x1] requires that many DON!! cards to be attached to the card. It may also appear beside a timing such as [When Attacking] or [Your Turn]; both requirements must be true. Check the timing, count the attached DON!!, then resolve the effect from start to finish. Review automatic windows in our [On Play], [When Attacking] and [On K.O.] guide.
Understanding DON!! -X
DON!! -X tells you to return the stated number of DON!! from your field to your DON!! deck. It is not resting or discarding. Unless the text narrows the choice, returned cards may come from the cost area or from cards they were attached to. Recount the remaining field after payment.
This reduces your resources until DON!! returns through the DON!! Phase or an effect. Compare the immediate result with next turn's development before paying.
Refresh Phase reset
At the beginning of your turn, the Refresh Phase makes rested cards active. Attached DON!! then returns to the cost area active. The DON!! Phase normally adds the cards specified by the rules. Use this reset to verify the field total before acting.
The five-call Poke-Geek routine

- Recheck timing and attached DON!!.
Common mistakes
- Trying to pay with attached DON!!.
- Claiming +1000 from a rested payment.
- Forgetting the boost lasts during your turn.
- Treating DON!! -X as resting.
- Using an effect without meeting both timing and [DON!! xX].
- Mixing field zones.
Final checklist
- The use is announced.
- The selected cards are active when required.
- The count matches the cost or condition.
- The movement follows the correct procedure.
- The boost and its duration are understood.
- The effect timing is legal.
- The field and DON!! deck are recounted.
