Yu-Gi-Oh! Spells: Continuous, Equip or Field?

Yu-Gi-Oh! booster display from the Poke-Geek catalogue illustrating Spell Card types

Not every Yu-Gi-Oh! Spell follows the same cycle. Continuous, Equip and Field Spells normally remain face-up after a successful activation, but they use different zones and links.

This complements Chains and Spell Speed, turn phases and condition, cost and effect.

Start with the icon

SpellZoneWhat to track
ContinuousSpell & Trap ZoneFace-up presence and card text
EquipSpell & Trap ZoneThe chosen face-up monster
FieldField ZoneThe player’s dedicated zone

Continuous Spell

It stays face-up in a Spell & Trap Zone. Its text may apply continuously, trigger or allow later activations. Do not send it to the Graveyard after its first use like a Normal Spell.

Equip Spell

It equips a legal face-up monster and remains in a Spell & Trap Zone. Place it behind the monster as a reminder without moving it out of its true zone. If the monster leaves the field or becomes face-down, the Equip Spell is destroyed under the general rules.

Field Spell

It uses the Field Zone. Each player can control one on their side. Playing another sends the previous Field Spell to the Graveyard; that procedure is not automatically destruction.

Activate, resolve, remain

Separate the activation, the resolution of the activation effect and the later face-up presence. Destroying a card in response is not always the same as negating its activation.

Five questions

  1. Which icon?
  2. Which zone?
  3. Which card or game state is linked?
  4. How long does it apply?
  5. Why does it leave the field?

Common mistakes

  • Sending Continuous Spells away too early.
  • Using a regular Spell & Trap Zone for a Field Spell.
  • Hiding an Equip Spell under a monster.
  • Keeping an Equip Spell with no valid face-up monster.
  • Calling every departure destruction.

Before activating a Spell, name its type, zone and the condition that lets it remain face-up.
